The Kaibab National Forest surrounding Tusayan is striking in its own right. Countless creatures call the Ponderosa pines home, and you’re bound to hear a Green-tailed Towhee serenading from somewhere in the treetops. You can immerse yourself in the Kaibab’s wilderness on a guided Jeep Tour or ATV Tour. Throughout the adventure, spot grazing elk, absorb local history and stop at Grandview Lookout Tower to climb the steps for a 360-degree vista of the forest.

Hike or bicycle the 4.4-mile Tusayan Forest Trail, a moderately challenging loop among a spring bloom of globemallow flowers accented by cool breezes and golden sunlight. The Montane Forest Trail is slightly longer at 7.3 miles, but both trails lead to the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument, a pristine wilderness area nearly 500,000 acres in size.
There’s also the 6.6-mile Tusayan Greenway Trail, which features a smooth gravel path to Mather Point near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. No bike? No problem. Bike rentals are available for 1-hour, half-day and full-day rental
