Adventure awaits in the heart of Rim Country

Sponsored by Adventure Payson

Nestled at the base of the Mogollon Rim, Payson blends mountain-town charm with outdoor adventure. Just 90 minutes from the Phoenix metro area, Payson is where Sonoran landscapes give way to dense forests, shimmering lakes and scenic mountain trails.

What makes Payson especially unique is its year-round appeal. In summer, cooler temperatures provide a welcome respite from the desert heat. Fall offers a kaleidoscope of colors, as oaks and maple paint the town in red, gold and yellow. Come winter, Payson turns into a landscape dusted with snow, while spring brings sunny days and blooming wildflowers. No matter the season, Payson is ripe for exploration —whether you are chasing thrills or a peaceful escape, the region’s natural wonders deliver an unforgettable experience.

Here are four ways to adventure in this exciting mountain town.

Explore the Natural Landmarks

A short drive from Payson lies one of Arizona’s most unforgettable destinations: Tonto Natural Bridge. This stunning state park is home to what is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world, an awe-inspiring wonder that towers 183 feet high and spans 150 feet wide. The bridge arches over Pine Creek and a canyon that’s lush with native plants and local wildlife. Within this remote park, there are two ways to experience the gorge’s wild beauty. Visitors can hike through the 400-foot tunnel that runs through the center of the natural bridge or view it from above via several observation points situated at parking lots along the main park road.

Kayak Tranquil Lakes

Breathe in Payson’s crisp mountain air at Green Valley Park. The sprawling 45-acre green space sits in the heart of Payson at the west end of Main Street. Three lakes are ideal for kayakers and paddleboarders eager to ply the calm waters, but if you prefer to stay on shore, test your angling skills by fishing for rainbow trout (each lake is stocked from October to May), strolling the shaded walking paths that encircle the lakes, letting the kiddos frolic on the playground or savoring lunch at one of the picnic areas that dot the grassy lawns.

Experience Payson’s Western Heritage

Payson Playbook

Discover fascinating regional history at the Rim Country Museum. Here, peruse exhibits depicting Native American stories and pioneer tales, then take a deep dive into the world’s oldest continuous rodeo and step inside a re-created blacksmith shop. The museum’s most popular draw is the docent-led tour of a replica of Zane Grey’s cabin. The Western-genre author made his homestead in Rim Country, and after the cabin burned in 1990, it was faithfully reconstructed on site at the museum. Be sure to check out the gift shop’s offering of local-interest and history books, apparel, Rim Country memorabilia, children’s toys and a huge selection of Zane Grey novels.

Hit the Rim Trails

Stretching more than 60 miles along the base of the Mogollon Rim, the Highline Trail is considered the crown jewel of Rim Country adventure. Outdoors enthusiasts will relish a day spent among the trail’s Ponderosa pine forests, expansive meadows and creek crossings where mountain streams provide refreshing breaks. Hikers can explore sections that range from moderate to strenuous while trail runners can lace up their shoes for rugged elevation changes that bestow panoramic Rim views. And for mountain bikers, there is the thrilling challenge of technical climbs, descents and winding singletrack.
