Beloved by generations of players and managers, Mike Murphy was a fixture in the Cactus League for more than six decades. Murphy worked for the San Francisco Giants from the time the club arrived on the West Coast after the 1957 season. Murphy started as a bat boy, and on his first day on the job he met a rising star named Willie Mays, who became a lifelong friend. Murphy soon became the Giants’ home clubhouse manager, a position he held until his retirement following the 2022 season after 65 years with the club. The Giants’ clubhouse in Oracle Park is named for Murphy.
