Opening in February, 2011, Salt River Fields will become the new spring training home for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.
Located on a 140-acre site, Salt River Fields lies in the heart of the East Valley, near the Pima-Loop 101 Freeway and Indian Bend Road. Owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), Salt River Fields is the first Major League Baseball Spring Training facility built on Native American land.
The complex consists of separate training facilities and clubhouses accommodating each team as well as an 11,000-seat central stadium which features a uniquely designed roof structure that offers fans in the cross aisle plenty of shade.
The stadium design offers completely open fan observation areas, allowing glimpses into the players' daily lives and training routines. The stadium is at the heart of the development, with batting cages, practice fields and clubhouses radiating around it. The site also supports 12 practice fields and two soccer fields at the facility.
When it opens, Salt River Fields will be active 365 days a year and will host numerous community activities including youth camps, community events, festivals, retreats and facility rentals for conferences, parties and other large gatherings.
The natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem is also integrated into the overall baseball fan experience. The design reflects Arizona's regional architectural - from the native colors to the natural materials.
Mortenson Construction is the general contractor for Salt River Fields. Mortenson's recent projects include Glendale's Camelback Ranch facility, built for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox HKS Architects, which recently designed Glendale's Camelback Ranch facility for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox and Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, is the architectural firm for Salt River Fields.
Salt River Fields at Talking Stick will be the newest entertainment venue to carry the "Talking Stick" brand as it joins Talking Stick Golf Club and Talking Stick Resort. The name "Salt River Fields" refers to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the 12 practice fields as well as the Community's agricultural history. The "Talking Stick" is a historical reference to a traditional Pima calendar stick on which carvers recorded significant events and milestones. The Salt River Fields logo is based on a concept by Pima artist Royce Manuel and has been refined by Dallas-based focusEGD.
